Another Hiking Trip

We decided to go hiking again today. This time we went on a loop near Cove Lake. There were 4 caches on this loop. Some parts were pretty steep. We met some people who had the same idea as us. Overall we had a great time. The weather was perfect this weekend. After the hike we decided to take 309 south to Havana. The corps of engineers has some great drainage spots coming off of the mountains that make for some great picture opportunities.

A Little Hike

We have started to do a little more hiking. Since we moved to Paris we are at the foot of the highest mountain in Arkansas which is home to a lot of great hiking trails. We are also doing some Geocaching while we are out. Our first outing was on the Benefield East Loop. We found two caches on the trails. One of them was under a bluff face. Beautiful scenery in every direction. It was easily below 20 degrees and it was really cold on the north face. My family is having a great time getting out and getting some exercise.

Installing System Center Configuration Manager 2007 SP2 on Windows Server 2008 R2 is supported but you need to configure some extra IIS features which don’t need to be configured when installing SCCM 2007 on for instance Windows Server 2003. In this blog I will write about the prerequisites to be able to install SCCM 2007 on Windows Server 2008 R2.

To be able to install SCCM on Windows Server 2008 R2 you need to comply to the following requirements:

IIS needs to be installed with the following roleservices

Common HTTP Features
ASP.NET
Webdav Publishing
IIS 6 Management Compatibility
and more

Remote Differential Compression needs to be installed

WSUS 3.0 Sp2 Administrative Console needs to be installed

.Net update kb941132 needs to be installed for servers having an issue

The Active Directory Schema needs to be extended

WebDav needs to be installed and configured (extra)

Background Inteligent Transfer Service (BITS) needs to be installed and configured(extra)

Hotfix for System Center Configuration Manager 2007 R3 (KB977384)

The configuration of WebDAV and BITS in IIS is for Windows Server 2008 mandatory to be able to install SCCM.

Enable WebDAV and create an Authoring Rule (from Technet)

Use the following procedure to enable WebDAV and create an Authoring Rule for Windows Server 2008 and Windows Server 2008 R2:

Navigate to Start / All Programs / Administrative Tools / Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager to start Internet Information Services 7 Application Server Manager.

In the Connections pane, expand the Sites node, and then click Default Web Site .

In the Features View, double-click WebDAV Authoring Rules.

With the WebDAV Authoring Rules page displayed, in the Actions pane, clickEnable WebDAV.

In the Actions pane, click Add Authoring Rule.

In the Add Authoring Rule dialog box, for Allow access to, select All content.

For Allow access to this content to, select All users.

For Permissions, select Read, and then click OK.

Use the following procedure to change the property behavior of WebDAV on Windows Server 2008 and Windows Server 2008 R2:

In the WebDAV Authoring Rules page, in the Actions pane, click WebDAV Settings.

In the WebDAV Settings page, for Property Behavior, set Allow anonymous property queries to True.

Set Allow Custom Properties to False.

Set Allow property queries with infinite depth to True.

For a distribution point that is enabled for Allow clients to transfer content from this distribution point using BITS, HTTP, and HTTPS, for WebDAV Behavior, set Allow hidden files to be listed to True.

In the Action pane, click Apply.

Close Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager.

Modify requestfiltering for BITS:

Use the following procedure to modify requestFiltering for Windows Server 2008 and Windows Server 2008 R2.

Open the applicationHost.config file located in the %Windir%\System32\Inetsrv\Config\ directory on distribution points that are enabled for Allow clients to transfer content from this distribution point using BITS, HTTP, and HTTPS.

Search for the <requestFiltering> section.

Determine the file name extensions that you will have in the packages on that distribution point. For each file name extension that you require, change allowedto true.For example, if your package will contain a file with an .mdb extension, change the line <add fileExtension=”.mdb” allowed=”false” /> to <add fileExtension=”.mdb” allowed=”true” />.Allow only the file name extensions required for your packages.

Save and close the applicationHost.config file.

After this is done, you are able to install System Center Configuration Manager 2007 on Windows Server 2008 R2

I think I need to start updating my website again. It is one thing that I just overlook. We moved to Paris, AR in June. We purchased a house and we are happy with it. Linux will be starting school in August and he is excited about it.

Rope sling for My Rifle

I wanted to make a rope sling for my rifle. I saw an article in an old magazine and based my sling off of that. I used two 1-1/4" sling mounts. I used 50' of utility rope. It is recommended to use 550 cord but I didn't have any on hand. I decided to make a 50" sling. The one I had previously was too short. I mounted my sling mounts on a board 51" apart to a couple of screws. I looped the rope 5 times between the two mounts. I began to weave the rope through itself. It gets very tight toward the end. I used an awl and some hemostats to help. It is very soft and feels good. Best yet I have 50' of rope if I need it in the field.

Office 2007 Zenworks Deployment

First extract the files into a network accessible location. Next run the setup file with the /admin switch ex: \\server\volume\Office2007\setup.exe /admin . This will bring up the Office Customization Tool. This tool allows you to customize the installation. I checked these boxes for a silent installation with a status screen.

The "Product Key" must be entered
The Organization Name is entered
The "I Accept Agreement" box must be ticked
The "Display Level" drop down box must be set to BASIC
The suppress modal box must also be ticked
I check that "No Cancel" is ticked (optional)

When you have the install customized to your liking, save the MSP to the updates folder. ex \\server\volume\Office2007\Updates This folder is checked during the install for a customization file. This is also used to push out updates.

Back in ConsoleOne create a new "Simple application (no .AXT, .AOT, .MSI file)." Give your NAL Object a name like Office2007Install. When prompted for the path, specify \\server\volume\Office2007\setup.exe . You don't need to worry about the "parameters" as with older versions because it looks inside the updates folder for the customization file. You can now test the app by associating users and running the app.

Essential Linux Desktop Software

When I set up a new Linux deskop there are a few pieces of software that I install right away. First off I mke sure that Firefox is installed with Greasemonkey and Google Bookmarks button. Next I always install GNOMEDo for a keystroke launcher. My favorite text editor is Notepad++ and it is a windows software. Since I use this all the time I install Wine or Crossover. This is very handy when you need that windows app to run I then usually install Conky. Lifehacker has a great collection of scripts to customize it the way you like. I also love to use Photoshop but GIMP is a good alternativ (and the price cant be beat). I always install Remote Desktop support and VNC support. Last but not least is my favorite desktop background. That pretty much sums it up for me. Depending on the application I will install different software but for my desktop that is my starting list.

Motorcycle + Talimena Drive = Perfect Day

Nickie and I went down Talimena Drive today after church. It was a beautiful fall day and the leaves were showing their colors. We first went to Queen Wilamena Lodge for lunch. They had chicken fried steak on the buffet and it was great. After our bellies were full we stopped by to see the trains.

Now for the drive. It is 54 miles of changing elevation and curvy roads. The roads are in great shape and it has plenty of lookouts.

I have been searching for a good all around desktop to replace windows. I like Ubuntu but it would sleep properly with my Latitude D620, and I had problems with wireless. I switched to OpenSuse 11 and was fairly happy. It didn't seem very responsive and Yast was a little slow, but it worked. I recently tried Mepis Linux 8. I have only been using for a couple of days and I am very impressed. With the live CD my wireless and audio worked. This is a good sign. The installer is very intuitive and used Gparted to resize partitions if you want to keep your Windows installation. It installed very quickly and edited the MBR for the boot. After it starts is where it shines. Boot is very quick. Mepis uses 2.6.26.5 kernel, ntfs-3g34, OpenOffice 3.0rc2, and OpenJDK 6. I am really not a big fan of KDE but it is growing on me. Apt-get is great as it is something I missed with OpenSuse. I am having trouble installing Photoshop CS2 with Wine but that is another issue. More to come.

Linux again. There are so many different flavors I really cant choose. I liked OpenGEU a lot but it really didn't fit me. I think Suse will always be my favorite. The installation: I downloaded the ISO and burnt the DVD. I have never been successful with a DVD install of Suse on my laptop (Latitude D620). Today wasnt any different. It went fine until it started actually installing packages and it crapped out. I kind of expected it to happen so no problem, I will do a network install. It found my wireless (I dont have any cat5 cable around here) and accepted the repository fine. After 2 hours I had a working OpenSuse 11 installation. Man that was easy I think i will update, wrong! This is where Linux has its downfall, my wireless doesnt work. I was hoping for a smooth out of the box install. Since 11 hasnt been out very long there wasnt really much information about the problem. My card is a PRO/Wireless 3945ABG which I think is pretty common. Since I dont have a lan cable I am up the creek. Then I remember I brought another laptop home from work. I found the iwl3945-ucode package and moved it over from my new flash drive. It worked fine. So I am online and everything is running smoothly. I start up Firefox ver 3 and no flash. I was sure that I installed the plugin. Well the plugin doesnt work. I kind of expected this also. The gnash plugin really doesnt work either. I am searching for a solution to this and if anyone finds it first let me know. By the way I really like this distro. It is pretty fast and seems to be stable (so far). I am thinking I will keep this one for a while, or until something a LOT better comes out.

I am back to the ways of Linux. I started out with OpenSuse 10.3 but I could not get my wireless working. I spent half a day on that and then decided to go with the reliable Ubuntu. Install was easy and I have Office running in Wine. If Google would only release a Linux version of Sketchup I would be set.

Nickie wanted to do something special for our 10 year anniversiary. We decided to go and watch a hockey game. Since Dallas is the closest place to see a game we decided to go there. Since Detroit is our favorite team we waited to go and see them. it was awesome. We were 8 rows off of the glass. You could feel the hits and hear some of the ice talk. Nickie got some great pictures during the warm up and also through the game. During warm up we were right behind the goal against the glass. We made a sign and it was really noticed by the players. They kept giving her looks of approval. She had a great time and so did I. We definitely will be considering moving closer to a major league team when we move.

VMWare Server and Vista

So I am trying to get VMWare Server working properly on my Vista machine. I really am not having any luck. I cant get it to read the DVD drive. I decided to use an ISO image instead. I am having trouble getting this to work also. I can start an install but when it get to the point of actually writing to the disk it says insert CD1. I am getting tired of stuff not working with Vista. I did not have this problem with XP. I am almost to the point of switching back to XP.

The Flu SUCKS!!!

So me and Nickie have been sick for over 3 weeks. For Nickie it has been 4. We went to the doctor yesterday and they told her that she has the Flu. I had to get a breathing treatment, some steroids, and antibiotics. I am hoping we will feel better soon. This is the second time we have been sick with the flu since we have been married. We are trying to give up TV for a while and I think we picked a bad time to do it. Oh well, maybe we can read a book or something.

Laptop Woes

I have been trying to decide what to run on my laptop. I have moved away from XP. I first tried to go with Suse 10.1. I loved it. Integrated with Novell, Yast, 3D desktop, but...... the power consumption was terrible. I move around a lot and just could not have that. So I tried to give Vista a try. I know Vista? I have it installed now and am somewhat happy with it. I really like the Novell client for Vista and it seems to join a Windows Domain very smoothly. I am running Photoshop CS3 and Office 2007 with no problems. I recently upped the memory to 4 gigs and it boots faster and the Adobe products move like butter. I am planning to set up Suse in a VM in the next couple of weeks.

So it is a new year. I have decided to start a blog. I know everybody is doing it so I figured I would jump on board. I am really not sure what to writ e about but here goes.

Nickie and Linux are sick. We took Linux to the doctor today and he had to get some blood drawn. What an ordeal. We had four people holding him down. He has thin veins and the nurses tried three times before being successful. The last stick blew his vein and he has a nasty bruise. He is tough and will recover very quickly.
